The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Uploaded by sloopygoop on September 8th 2009, 10:50 PM

09/09/09

To commemorate The Beatles edition of Rock Band being released today, may I introduce to you...Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band!

Go buy yourself a copy of the game, or one of their newly rereleased CDs. Today's music owes a lot to these pioneers. Some of their music is still cutting-edge even today.
Having been some time in preparation, a splendid time is guaranteed for all who listen.

See it live here!

Cover sequenced with 5 freakin' LSDJ carts on 5 DMG-01 Nintendo Game Boys. Channels individually recorded in Audacity; effects added. Compare to the original and tell me what you think.

October 22 update: This song has been updated, remixed, and refined to become the sparkling gem that you can now find as part of the 8-Bit Operators' Beatles tribute! Tons of fabulous chiptune artists contributed to that project; I am honored to suddenly be on the stage with them.

  • sloopygoop : @TristEndo: Thanks for the tip. It's tricky when there are so many parts I want to be audible!
    on September 9th 2009, 06:51 PM
  • TristEndo : it sounds swampy due to so many sound channels i agree somewhat with anticlimax on that point though this is a neat idea. I usually don't deduct points for mixing , but in this case its critical because this becomes a sound wall by the main parts. you might want to try low volumes and than gradually increase them with each listen. i dunno i liked it though good job, maybe continue it with your own original solos :D

  • sloopygoop : *beaming from the love* @sci: Thanks for your detailed critique. I like that idea about the melody and would have liked to try it. @NOROCK: I am honored! @Receptors: No hard feelings. Every creative Beatles fan had probably determined to put something out today, since long ago. I'd be thrilled to join up with you guys in whatever way! Email me with details. :D

  • sci : Oh god here comes a different opinion: I think the lead/vocals sound too monotone. To be more specific, I think you should have had some pitch bending at the beginning and end of some of the notes. Also, all the low frequencies sound muddy in a detracting way. In other words, it's not perfect...but it's not bad, either.

  • Receptors : yes it is quite good! i made a snarky comment earlier cos you did this the same day as 8bitops as we had announced a few times we would.,( i think an hour earlier than me, sneakybastard!;) ) so sorry i was a bit mean... i saw you made a nice comment on our post too. hey it's 1million random acts of kindness day today btw, with that spirit in mind, would you be interested in possibly including this in the bonus tracks when we do the full release of our comp on 10/09/09, Lennon's birthday?.

  • Soda boy : Anticlimax you are fool.

  • Ghostface Kilobyte : If the Beatles had LSDJ carts I think 5 is the exact number they would have used.
    on September 9th 2009, 06:09 AM
  • Kenobit : Too many LSDJs! :) Btw, the ending is perfect.

  • Brossard : This is an incredible feat! Must have been a mission to arrange it all as skilfully as you have, hats off to you squire! I think jealousy is the natural reaction

  • TraceKaiser : That was pretty awesome! I think it would've been cool if you'd made some of the instruments sound.. fatter? I'm not sure if you get what I mean haha, but that's personal preference anyway. Can't wait for a Beatles comp to come out!

  • sloopygoop : Thanks as always for your encouragement and thoughtful suggestions AlexLuthor. The drums and panning are about what they are in the original. (I listened very very closely!) :)
    on September 8th 2009, 11:34 PM
  • AlexLuthor : The guitar sounds cool, but I think you could put some more work into the drums and you only use l+r panning for a small part of the song. I suppose it's very true to the original though.

  • sloopygoop : Thanks you guys! I tried to match most of the tones in the actual song and basically just Nintendicize it. @Anticlimax: What sounds terrible about it?
    on September 8th 2009, 11:04 PM
  • yuh : this is awesome
    on September 8th 2009, 10:59 PM
  • christopher_voss : That would take a lot of batteries. I think 15 melody channels is a little overkill, even for a song like this, but the outcome is fantastic. Liked.

  • an-cat-max : sounds terrible. stop syncing so many gameboys @_@
