Elementary School Supernova (Atari Pokey)

Uploaded by kulor on November 25th 2009, 10:50 PM

A quick lil' tune I put together for the 10th anniversary of the Atari SAP Music Archive, ASMA. I guess it's in some Polish compo somewhere? Hey! Turns out the best way to get past the Pokey's horrible detuning problem is to...pretend it doesn't exist!

  • matecha : Song is pretty much embedded in my head since I heard it. Wicked songwriting man (not to mention the POKEY just sounds stupid awesome). I kept humming/beatboxing this damn song without really recalling where I heard it.. then I remembered. Feel honored! hahaha :)

  • themediashow : Wow, I don't know much about the different systems for making music, I just know what I like... but now I know I like Pokey. This is really unusual stuff, very clean, very striking!

  • analog : hey, if you send me the .xex file, I can record it on real hardware. I have an atari 800 xl ready to go!

  • kulor : Glad you like, everyone! :D || @cTrix and yerzmyey: Authentic mono single-Pokey tune, done in Raster Music Tracker. I'll post the SAP on my 2a03.free.fr sometime. If you'd like to record it on real hardware, that would be amazing!

  • yerzmyey : A very good chiptune. Totally non-typical approach to the pokey. How many chips did You use? One or two? If You want, I can aks some people to record it from a real ardware (if this comes from the RMT). Anyway - I love the composition. It's in style of Tim Follin.

  • sserrac : Brilliant song. I'd love to use RMT, but I just can't figure out how to get it working. I guess I'll have to look deeper into the missing .dll thing. Does anyone know where I could find a tutorial on the tracker, or am I going to have to spend hours figuring it out myself? >_>

  • cTrix : POKEY YES! Man... those detuned double notes are just magnificent. This tune is great (listened 3 times + dl) What Blitz said x 100... lovin' the total wank factor and can't get enough!!! The sounds are just wondrous - did this stick to polyphony rules or could you really get this much out of it? More Pokey!! :-D

  • mathgrant : Holy crap! This tune is so amazing, that I can't believe it was composed using a chip with a horrible detuning problem! Also, I concur with everyone else.

  • kulor : Amatecha: Raster Music Tracker. The Pokey chip is the sound chip found in a lot of old arcade boards like Centipede and Missile Command, as well as the Atari 5200 and the entire line of 8-bit computers by them (400/800, 600XL/800XL, 65XE/130XE).

  • matecha : Sounds rad!!! How can you control one of these POKEY chips? Never heard of this before (had to search it up to see what it was)...!
