Romantic Central Processing Unit

Uploaded by MISTER BEEP on December 14th 2008, 08:57 AM

Hi there. ;) This time something 'softer' (maybe because of oncoming Christmas? ;) ).
This is kind of '1-bit chiptune ballad' and maybe you remember that music on ZX 48K is being played by its Z80 CPU. Because of these reasons I entitled this tune "Romantic Central Processing Unit". :) :) :)
It has 2 channels at most but I used to say that songs made on "Music Box" have only 1,5 of channel. :) It's because when tones play - you have 2 chnls but when drums are playing - nothing more can, so then it's only 1 chnl. That's why actually the tune has not full 2 channels of sound. ;) Making such music reminds me embroidering a tapestry or a carpet: you must put sounds among lonely drums. ;) Kind of back-breaking work but can be done. ;)
Software used: Orfeus Music Assembler and The Music Box.
Btw, this time it's rather a simple tune but I noticed it can glue into your brain. ;)
PS: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to ALL! :)

 • MISTER BEEP : Thanks again, mates. :) I do appreciate it. Warlord: heh, that's true, the humble good MusicBox is deeply old. :) In 1985 they only started to learn how to make multichannels engines. I consider myself lucky they finally came up with 4 and 8 channels editors in 1988/1990. :) (Engines themselves were available earlier - but only for game developers, you know). Anyway from time to time I like going back to the oldest nonagenarian ;) - The Music Box. Some listenners from ZX scene have a sentiment for it. Also the square waves don't harm from time to time. ;) Best wishes to all. MB

 • MISTER BEEP : DJ Hollow Life: it would be very cool, man. ;) Thanks. :) Athleos: well, maybe not useless (it's good for games actually :) ), but I'm afraid for music TS1000 is not a good choice.

 • athleos : thanks for the response! sorry to hear my machine is useless but i figured as much. :( maybe i'll write my own engine for such a thing on the TS1000... ;)

 • MISTER BEEP : Silreq: It depends. The man was right. It simply depends on model. Timex Sinclair 2068 doesn't require any additional modules - it has integrated AY chip. Timex Computer 2048 doesn't have AY (people use AY-interfaces). However I use original TC2048's sound which is generated by Z80 chip and can play from 1 - 8 channels (depending on used software engine). "Music Box" engine is very simple one but from time to time I like to use it too. ;) Greetings all! :)

 • silreq : I thought the timex sinclair could be 3 channels if you got the joystick add-on, or is this lie told to me by an old man, actually the old man in question couldn't even believe that people still make music on a timex sinclair. . . he's 50 sumthin' and actually worked with a timex sinclair back in the day

 • MISTER BEEP : Many thanks, guys. :) :) :) Athleos: well, I'm afraid for now there are not engines or editors for such complicated stuff, on TS1000. :( Theoretically it should work because the machine has both required chips: Z80 and ULA but still, as a final result, the TS1000 is much slower than TC2048. Additionally TS1000 has too low level output on MIC port so probably it would be impossible to record anything from it. :( For now I know they made some 1-channels songs (written only in assembler) and only with square wave. Anyway I wasn't personally able to record them or even listen to them properly because volume level is close to zero. :( :( :(

 • athleos : great track. just curious, is it possible to do this with a TS1000? i have one collecting dust and i don't know what to do with it.
