(Yamaha DSR-2000) Funk City at Night

Uploaded by Jredd on May 24th 2009, 08:30 PM

Here is another tune I wrote on my Yamaha Fm synth. This one is a bit crazy with the lead. I had a lot of fun making this one. I hope you guys enjoy it!

  • Jredd : It would take a bit of time, but yeah I certainly could record each channel separate and EQ them. That's a good idea, thanks! Also, much appreciation for the likes and comments guys. I might have to try out something soon but I am keeping it a secret he he!

  • µB : This is pretty cool. Nice idea with the half-speed recording, only nitpick is the sound of the bass was very flat.

  • AlexLuthor : Great track, think I'm gonna jam to this a bit with the bass and see if I can keep up hehe. I think it'd sound even better if you boosted the bass a bit (more depth), and tried to separate each instrument more. It took me a couple of listens to hear all the cool stuff going on :)

  • Jredd : I record each track at roughly half the speed live with the exception of the drums. Those are programed and switched around with fill in's and stuff. Track one is a 4 poly track (good for chords). Track 2 records 2 notes at a time (decent for backing strings or sound effects. Track 3 is a mono bass (1 note at a time), and track 4 is a solo synth (one note at a time, good for fast arpeggios and quick scale runs and the like. Track 5 is programed PCM drums (To help keep time at first, then I go back and vary them up a bit. I save it to the keyboard itself and play it back at a faster speed which is usually more or less twice the speed it was originally played at. Hope that answers your question. :)

  • yerzmyey : Shit, man, do You play it "from hand"?? Even after quantization it's very impressive. Very resouceful improvisations. Also I love all the toy-keyboard micromusic. Hopefully there will be a full album??

  • Ultrasyd : The sound is good, but morover the music is excellent ! Real music ! It's moving, it's groovy, and the feeling is like in an old Sega game indeed. It goes straight to my playlist ;)

  • Jredd : Thanks, to be fair the synth chip inside this keyboard is pretty close to the one found a genesis. Except this can record 8 channels of FM with a couple of channels of PCM for drums. Where as genesis seems to use less fm channels but can turn one of them into Dac and has PSG to help too. The cool thing though is that this is a 4 OP FM synth :).

  • bullet flu : No, I think this is still way in the boundaries of safe to post here. Especially if you weren't so forthright and honest about this being played on a keyboard, I'm sure more than half of the people here would think this really was done with Sega Genesis instruments or whatnot:)

  • Jredd : I added some reverb and compression to this one. Glad you guys seem to like it. I wasn't sure how it would be received considering it's quite different from the type of things that others post here.

  • bullet flu : Cool. I think the sound quality on this one is a lot better too. I love songs with "big city in the night time" as the theme.
