Mostly in ModPlug, using hacked up home brewed samples from NSFs. I've made a few NSFs myself in FamiTracker as well, but I prefer ModPlug for any actual projects I work on. Since it's Modplug, I try to follow the restrictions of the NES sound hardware as best as I understand them. 1 Triangle wave (either on or off), 2 square waves (with only 16 levels of volume), 1 DPCM channel for kicks and snares (Only one at a time), and one noise channel for hi hats and cymbals. When it comes to writing chiptunes, I simply can not settle for writting simple pieces. It's almost like a compulsion. I try to never simply repeat patterns. Even if the structure of the song says that I should have a pattern repeat four times, I will always try to make those four patterns have something unique in them. Such as drum fills, background melodies ect. The goal is to try and make the listener hear something new every time they play the song. For such a restricted sound engine, that is where all the fun of doing this comes in to play. It's all about pushing the restrictions to their breaking point until it's almost as if they don't exist.   • Norrin_Radd : Hmm, I don't have the exact advice to give you, but I seem to recall sometimes my DPCM results would be either totally silent, or all garbled up. If I remember corrrectly, the solution is to mess around with the 81.exe flags. The usage report says **********usage: 81 infile outfile [upsample_pct [amplitude]] example: 81 song.wav song.dmc 100 24.********** I would suggest for any samples that don't turn out right, raise the upsample percentage from 100 to 200 to 300 until it sounds ok. I do believe I had to do that for a few random samples, but I can't really recall. For these particular samples I did all of this 3 years ago. My memory is a little Hazy. If you are still having butt loads of trouble, let me know and I'll see if I can work a little magic on the wav files personally. Sticking together is what good waffles do.

  • babul : Hi, can you explain please what settings did you use when changing drums to DPCM? I tried with Addictive Drums and 81.exe with lot of combinations, but sound is much more dirty in opposite to your smooth drums (also I had many times high frequency constant *beep*, but it can be fixed with Eq). I tried exporting to 8/11/44.1 kHz with similiar result.. I would be very happy if you could share your source export bitrate or something... And gratz on catchy track, especially at the beginning :)

  • Norrin_Radd : Shit dude. This track definitely takes NES metal chiptunes to another level. That fast part in the middle really reminds me of the Batman Boss Battle tune. Sounds so damn heavy! This track is absolutely manic man!
