ATARI FALCON 030

Uploaded by yerzmyey on September 22nd 2009, 03:53 AM

Yo. We finally forced my new asset to work. Well, not entirely, but still I can watch demos, heh. Sadly the sound is not fully functional - one stereo channel has burnt and at the moment we don't have the chip that is to replace. We connected in this place the internal speaker sound for now, which gives some equivalent. Enough for demos but surely not enought to make music, sadly. ;( That's an original configuration - 4Mb of RAM and 16Mhz CPU.

  • yerzmyey : Now we try to connect a CF card to it. It wors instead of HDD but doesn't want to work WITH HDD, as a second drive. Grrrrr. Next time we will try in Saturday. God help us. ;) ;) ;)

  • yerzmyey : Ant1: Yes, it was expensive. :) It was about 1200 PLN. And 1$ in that time was about 3,2 PLN. Still remembering our prices are lower than UK/DE/USA and wherever more... Well, yes - an expensive toy. ;) ACE-Tracker is great but the Falcon has also a regular AY, like Atari ST. :)

  • ant1 : I'm interested in how much this cost you... I've never seen one for less than $500. The few songs I've heard from ace tracker were pretty cool, and it has a really fresh, modern looking interface too. You're so lucky to have this computer! :)

  • yerzmyey : NOROCK: Yes, Falcon uses regular-shaped diskdrive but - what is more interesting - as far as I know it's simply normal PC diskdrive. :) (In opposition to ST series). So changing should be easy. This is 32bit machine (like PC) but still have YM chip on-board. :) However for me more interesting is another music feature of Falcon. It's used by ACE Tracker - here are songs made in this sound-engine: nb.atari.org/main.php?page=ace_tunes dj FIRE FLOWER: Well, it is not very compatible with ST series but many ST games have been changes especially for Falcon (and they're on the Net). Also many ST application works. But not demos. ;)

  • NOROCK : Did they all have the standard format floppy drive like that? The STe has a unique cut in the casing that only lets stock or refurb floppy drives fit (without cutting anything). Nevertheless, gotta love those machines. Like the dark keys of the Falcon too. Man I need to get to work on my STe. Blergh

  • yerzmyey : I dunno at the moment (also I'm not a type of soldering/electronic guy), however there are two the same chips near to sound-output: one for left channel and one for the right. Our guess is - one of them is dead and therefore the channel is dead too. Jack-output is surely OK. In this case Pionokio used additional mono sound output (from internal speaker) and connected it temporaliry instead of the dead channel. Like I said it's enough for demos but still not enough for music-making, heheh. ;) Later I'll try to post some more photos, with editors-screens too.
