Small Talk (neat 8bit toy i found)

Uploaded by PlayItLoud! on January 11th 2009, 09:10 PM

Found it laying around my grandma's house the other day. apparently it's and old toy of mine. the keyboard on it (as well as the freakish animal sounds) made it apparent to me as 8bit.

  • Note! : Please review what "8-bit" actually means before you go around telling everyone you have an "8-bit toy" because it "looks 8-bit" - whatever that means. This doesn't have an 8-bit processor in it because it doesn't need to process anything since it probably just plays back samples stored on an IC. The fact that it was made in the 80's only supports that further. Considering that an NES, which used an 8-bit processor and actually did some processing, cost $200 when it was released should tell you that it most definitely would not have been the most cost effective way to go. Please don't assume everything that was "made in the 80s" and spits out a square wave or 2 is "8-bit". Cool toy nonetheless. Sorry you caught me on a bad day :) I just don't like people to be confused and spread confusion.

  • ... : I would think the sounds would come from a memory bank, not really "processed".

  • PlayItLoud! : well. Due to the fact that it's in such nice condition, and i can hardly find any information on it anywhere, i dont have the heart to crack it open. So most likely i'll just put a mic on a stand and position it right over the speaker (that's how i recorded the intro/outro to Space is A Dangerous Place).

  • retroboytimo : seems like a pretty cool toy to use for performances, allthough, will it be possible to keep the speaker and still be able to plug it in a speaker?

  • PlayItLoud! : well for one, the keyboard has that very gameboy like quality to it's tone. and for another the animal sounds are very similar to those of the LSDJ kits. However the age was the biggest clue to me. It was made in 1988, so an 8bit sound device would probably been the most cost effective way to make it. So do i know it's 8bit for sure? not really, but all signs point that way for me.

  • Low-Gain : these are crazy toys!

  • Note! : I don't want to come off aggressive here but... what about this makes you think it uses an 8-bit processor therefor is "8-bit"?

  • Deepearthvoid : i like how its called "small talk". i wouldnt have really understand the concept of breif and unimportant conversation for the sake of not being awkward or passing time at that age.
