Probably an April Fool's joke. I don't think I've met Brandon / Laromlab, but I've met Jenn De La Vega, and she seemed on the level. She also works for a publicity company, so ... pranks make good publicity.

Good call, and if it is a prank, I sure fell for it! I even called Dino, who played with him here when he toured Philly, and told him about it! ![]()

You know, now I'm not so sure myself.
According to Mushpot Records, Laromlab's label -- http://mushpotrecords.com/news/
Mushpot Records wrote:
I am taking steps to communicate with the offended parties. As far as I could gather, here are the original track names and artists that make up the Laromlab album:
Laromlab / Original Title / Artist
1 Rock!! Hard!! / Nightvision / CrazyQ
2 Mission for Glory / Haschkaka / Dubmood
3 C: Dancer / Cybernetic Dancer / DMA-SC
4 Phat and Phunky Pt. 1 / Phat and Phunky Pt. 1 / CrazyQ
5 Zipp Zapp / Zip Zap Space Attack / CrazyQ
6 They’re back!!! / Return of the Fighters / DMA-SC
7 Sid Attax / Atari Attacks / CrazyQ
8 Return of Da Stomp / Local Hero / CrazyQ
9 Punk Funk / Pink Phunk Monster / CrazyQ
10 Nightdrive / Stars of the Night / DMA-SC
11 T-girl Dancing / T-Girl / Lotek Style
12 (Hidden) / Hiapoe / DMA-SC
Here's Crazy Q's "Pink Phunk Monster"
http://technopolitan.se/~crazyq/mp3/Pin … onster.mp3
And I found an excerpt of Laromlab's "Punk Funk" here:
http://www.last.fm/music/Laromlab/_/PunkFunk
... and they are in fact the same song.
I did some Google poking for "Laromlab" and I found
- links to YouTube videos that had since been removed by the user
- Dead or gutted social networking site profiles
- Dead website
- A rant by Dubmood
All of these things seem plausible fakeries -- a lot of work, but doable -- and it's probably not particularly difficult to trigger a Dubmood rant, if someone really wanted to stir shit up to manipulate appearances. The Last.fm thing seems harder to fake, since it aggregates listening habits over longer periods of time. That said, the playcounts aren't particularly huge, so maybe a month's work of deliberately stacking Last.fm with Laromlab plays (and uploading bogus Crazy Q songs) would create a playcount in believable numbers.
On the other hand, the CMJ article seemed oddly demonstrative, given the subject matter -- really telegraphing the theft (and sending readers to Insound -- although, from what I could tell, with empty search results for the album).
Don't know. If it's a hoax, throw me in with the suckers, it's pretty convincing.

At this point I'm 99% convinced this isn't a hoax. I'm less familiar with Lotek Style and Dma-Sc's tracks, but I listen to a lot of Crazy Q, and most of the audio previews on this page are definitely Crazy Q's music.

Thats pretty crazy if its true. Atchley and I played a show with them a couple months ago...

Judging by the Pouët thread, looks like it's no hoax. Sounds like the European sceners blew the whistle and took Mushpot to task.

Wow. Talk about retard alert.
I can only hope that the record label sees sence and releases the CD with the correct YM Rockers credits.

Hey, seemingly the only way to make it in the music business is to steal other folk's tracks.
So Bit Shifter, how about I become the public face of your music, get all the money/tour the world, and we split the money 90/10 in your favour? ![]()

What the hell? How do you get far/good/respected enough to get a physical CD released if you're like that?
Grarggrggh. If it's true, I mean.

also this guys 2 daft punk covers are surprizingly similar to Ikuma's covers of exactly the same songs, that Ikuma posted on 8bc.

"suprisingly similar" as in "identical"?

thats hilarious and tragic.

man. that sucks. i really liked Laromblab too. if he had just said he was a chiptune DJ, that would be different and more respectable. But... damn... he blatantly ripped off the tracks of other artists. That's low. Fuck balls.
WELCOME TO MY BALLS, LAROMBLAB

Detective Bit Shifter on the case!

I've spoken to Ikuma, they are his remixes!
Apparantly Ikuma contacted him back in December and got him to remove the tracks and the guy still went to to release a CD of ripped off stuff!

Stuff like this really gets under my skin. Obviously this guy is remorseful, he came clean and yeah it's the right thing to do and it takes courage, blah blah blah -- but my internal response is still just contempt. The snow-job perpetrated on both the websites / radio DJs / readers / listeners just really riles me, mainly because the real story will probably never ultimately trickle down to all of them. People out there will still unknowingly be spinning Crazy Q tracks and giving shout-outs to Laromlab.

Just a reminder this guy just finished an extensive us tour. Mega lames.
ps: im not accusing robot cowboy of anything, he seems cool and legit.
